Karate in Rothwell — Your Nearest WYSOK Clubs
Rothwell sits almost exactly between Leeds and Wakefield, which is awkward for some things and useful for others. For martial arts it works in your favour: there are WYSOK clubs in both directions, on different nights, and neither is far.
Gorse Karate — Wednesday, south Leeds
Gorse Karate trains at The Ruth Gorse Academy on Black Bull Street, about four miles up the A61 and close enough to the city centre to suit anyone finishing work in town. It runs Wednesday evenings, 6:00pm to 8:00pm, taking students from age six, with all grades training together.
Sensei Frankie Preston leads it, supported by instructors holding grades across several different styles. Gorse consistently fields a strong team at local tournaments, so if your child turns out to enjoy competing, this is a club that will take that seriously rather than treat it as a sideline.
Suzaku Martial Arts — Friday, Beeston
Suzaku Martial Arts runs at Beeston Village Community Centre on Beeston Park Place, Friday evenings from 6:30pm to 8:00pm, for ages ten and up. Suzaku Sparks takes four to nine year olds in the first hour, with the two groups training alongside each other before the youngest finish.
Sensei Antony Longmire holds 5th Dan in karate and a particularly deep knowledge of traditional weapons, which works its way into the senior sessions. Middleton, Belle Isle, Holbeck and Hunslet supply most of the membership, so Rothwell is well within the club’s usual catchment.
Or south, towards Wakefield
If Wakefield is the easier run for you, Newmillerdam Karate Club trains Tuesday and Thursday, 7:00pm to 8:30pm at the Lakeside Methodist Centre on Barnsley Road, with a Pee Wee class for four to eleven year olds in the hour before. It is where WYSOK began, and it is run by the association’s chief instructor.
Choosing between them
The honest difference is the night and the feel. Gorse is a larger, competition-minded club in a modern academy building. Suzaku is smaller, with a strong weapons element and two age groups sharing the hall. Newmillerdam is the oldest club in the association, with a separate class for the youngest children.
All three teach Wado Ryu karate, so a student can move between them without starting again. Grading runs through the same WYSOK syllabus either way.
Every instructor is DBS checked, first aid trained and fully insured. The first session is free at all of them, with no contract and no joining fee — or put your postcode into the club finder and see all sixteen sorted by distance.
