Karate in Ossett — Your Nearest WYSOK Clubs
There is no WYSOK hall in Ossett itself, which is worth saying plainly. What there is instead is a choice of three clubs, all within roughly ten minutes’ drive, each running on a different night. For a lot of Ossett families that turns out to be an advantage rather than a compromise — you can pick the night that fits rather than the one that happens to be local.
Eagle Rose School of Karate — Horbury
Eagle Rose is the closest, at Horbury Methodist Church on High Street, a little under three miles from Ossett town centre. It runs on Tuesday evenings, 7:00pm to 8:30pm, taking students from age seven upwards, under Sensei Matthew Barlow. Horbury and Ossett between them make up most of the club, so your child is likely to recognise faces from school.
Shinobi Martial Arts — Kirkhamgate
Shinobi trains at Kirkhamgate Village Hall on Brandy Carr Road, Thursday evenings from 5:45pm to 7:15pm, from age six. The earlier finish suits younger children and families who would rather not be out late on a school night. Sensei Kevin Wood has competed at international level, and this is the newest club in the association — which in practice means smaller classes and more individual attention while it grows.
Optimal Martial Arts & Self Defence — Wakefield
If you are after something for yourself rather than for a child, Optimal runs Monday evenings, 7:30pm to 9:00pm at Standbridge Community Centre, for ages ten and up. It is ju jitsu rather than karate, with a strong emphasis on adapting technique to real self-defence situations.
Which would suit you?
Eagle Rose and Shinobi both teach Wado Ryu karate — striking, timing and distance, with short natural stances and an emphasis on moving off the line of an attack rather than blocking it head-on. Optimal teaches ju jitsu, which works closer in: throws, locks, holds and control.
Children generally take to one or the other fairly quickly. There is no harm at all in trying both before deciding, and no instructor will mind.
Every WYSOK instructor is DBS checked, first aid trained and fully insured. The association has taught in this part of Yorkshire since 1979 and is affiliated to NAKMAS.
Your first session is free at all three, with no contract and no joining fee. Wear something loose, bring a drink, and arrive a few minutes early. You can also search all sixteen clubs by postcode if you would rather see everything sorted by distance.
