Karate in Middleton — Your Nearest WYSOK Clubs
Middleton does not have a WYSOK hall of its own, but it is already one of the main catchments for Suzaku Martial Arts — alongside Belle Isle, Holbeck and Hunslet, Middleton supplies a good share of the club’s students. The journey is a short one.
Suzaku Martial Arts and Suzaku Sparks — Beeston
Both clubs share Beeston Village Community Centre on Beeston Park Place, around two miles from Middleton, on Friday evenings.
Suzaku Sparks is the junior class, four to nine years old, from 6:30pm to 7:30pm. Suzaku Martial Arts runs 6:30pm to 8:00pm for ages ten and up. The two train alongside one another for the first half of the session before the younger ones finish — which is worth knowing, because it means a parent and child can genuinely train at the same time rather than one watching the other.
Sensei Antony Longmire holds 5th Dan in karate and an unusually deep knowledge of traditional weapons. Bo, jo, sai, tonfa, kama and nunchaku all appear in the senior sessions, which is rarer than you might think — most clubs do not teach weapons at all.
Friday evenings
A Friday class divides opinion, and it is worth being honest about it. It does not clash with midweek homework or other clubs, and it rounds off the week rather than interrupting it. On the other hand it competes with everything else families do on a Friday. Plenty of people find it works precisely because nothing else is booked then.
Other options nearby
Gorse Karate on Black Bull Street runs Wednesday, 6:00pm to 8:00pm from age six, and is a similar distance. The two Iruka clubs at the White Rose Business Park run Tuesday and Friday, with a separate Pee Wee class for four to nine year olds.
All of them teach Wado Ryu karate, built around timing and body movement rather than strength, which makes it practical for lighter and smaller students as well as larger ones.
Every instructor is DBS checked, first aid trained and fully insured. Your first session is free, with no contract and no joining fee. If you would rather compare everything at once, the club finder sorts all sixteen by distance from your postcode.
