Karate in Crofton — Your Nearest WYSOK Clubs

Crofton is about as close to a WYSOK club as you can be without having one in the village. Hanshin Martial Arts trains at Sharlston Community Centre on Weeland Road, roughly five minutes away, and Crofton is one of its three main catchments alongside Sharlston itself and Walton.

Hanshin Martial Arts — two disciplines, two nights

Hanshin is the only club in the association running two different disciplines on separate nights, both for ages ten and up:

  • Tuesday, 6:30pm to 7:30pm — kickboxing
  • Friday, 7:00pm to 8:00pm — Wado Ryu karate

You can do either or both. Some students come to one night, some to both, and the instructor is relaxed about it.

Sensei Simon Diaz is among the most experienced instructors in WYSOK, with long knowledge across both disciplines, and he is one of the association’s most respected figures. The club has thirteen five-star reviews on Google, which for a village hall club is a fair reflection of how people find it.

Kickboxing or karate?

Worth understanding the difference before you choose a night. Kickboxing is closer to a combat sport: pads, bags, conditioning, and striking combinations worked at pace. It gets you fit quickly and the feedback is immediate.

Wado Ryu karate is the older, more technical discipline — kata, timing, distance and body movement, with a grading syllabus and a belt system that runs all the way to black belt and beyond. It rewards patience more than aggression.

Children often prefer the structure of karate. Adults who want a workout tend to start with kickboxing. Neither is the better choice in general; they are simply different.

If Tuesday and Friday do not work

Newmillerdam Karate Club runs Tuesday and Thursday, 7:00pm to 8:30pm, at the Lakeside Methodist Centre, with a Pee Wee class for four to eleven year olds beforehand — useful if your child is under ten and Hanshin’s minimum age rules it out for now.

Every WYSOK instructor is DBS checked, first aid trained and fully insured. The first session is free, with no contract and no joining fee. Or use the club finder to see all sixteen sorted by distance from your postcode.
