Karate in Morley — Your Nearest WYSOK Clubs
Morley has no WYSOK club within the town, but it does have something arguably more useful: two clubs at the same venue, on the same nights, covering completely different age groups. For families with children of different ages, that solves a problem that normally means two trips.
The two Iruka clubs — White Rose Business Park
Both run from The Hub on the White Rose Business Park in Beeston, around four miles from Morley town centre and a straightforward run down the A643 or off the M621.
Iruka Pee Wee Karate Club takes four to nine year olds on Tuesday and Friday from 5:45pm to 6:45pm. Iruka Karate Club follows for ages nine and up, 7:00pm to 8:00pm for lower grades and 8:15pm to 9:15pm for higher grades, on the same two nights.
In practice that means a family with a five-year-old and a twelve-year-old can do one journey rather than two, and a parent who fancies training themselves can take the later session while the children are in the earlier one.
Who teaches it
Sensei Tanya Pollard leads the club alongside her husband, Sensei Calvin Pollard, and their own daughter trains there. It is a family club in the literal sense, and that tone carries through the classes. There is a deep bench of instructors behind them holding grades across several styles.
Morley, Batley and Tingley together make up a large share of the membership, so Morley children are unlikely to be the only ones from their end of the world.
An alternative on a Friday
Suzaku Martial Arts at Beeston Village Community Centre is a similar distance and runs Friday evenings, 6:30pm to 8:00pm, for ages ten and up, with Suzaku Sparks for four to nine year olds in the first hour. Sensei Antony Longmire holds 5th Dan and an unusually deep knowledge of traditional weapons.
What is taught
All four clubs teach Wado Ryu karate, one of the four major Japanese styles. It is built around timing, body movement and evasion rather than meeting force with force, which makes it practical for smaller and lighter students — a point worth knowing if your child is on the small side for their year.
Every instructor is DBS checked, first aid trained and fully insured. First sessions are free, with no contract and no joining fee. You can sort all sixteen clubs by postcode if you want to compare.
